August 2012, Volume 2, Issue 8

Happy August, everyone!

My favorite article this month, by Anne-Marie Slaughter, may be my favorite article this year, or at least the best article on work-life balance I have read in a long time. After spending the last 7 years trying to work part-time to spend time with my daughter, and observing mother-colleagues of mine attempt to do the same, I have seen first-hand how often part-time work equates with “less committed to the organization” in the minds of others, both colleagues and leadership.  Some organizations won’t even consider part-time workers due to those same inaccurate assumptions. This article is a must-read for anyone juggling work and family, and for those who work with them.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

If we listened to our intellect, we’d never have a love affair. We’d never have a friendship. We’d never go into business, because we’d be cynical. Well, that’s nonsense. You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.

– Ray Bradbury
